Hoop & Grapes History

The Hoop and Grapes was built in 1721, although the cellars below probably date to the canalization of the the fleet in 1670-4. As an Inn it gained notoriety as a location for illegitimate Fleet weddings. The Hoop & Grapes is built on part of the historic burial grounds of St Bride's Church.

The 90s!

The Hoop and Grapes undergoes several changes and eventually gets closed down and scheduled for demolition. However, as the last surviving pub where Fleet weddings were held, the pub is given a stay of execution and becomes a Grade II Listed Building.
The Hoop is saved for the nation!

Shepherd Neame

Shepherd Neame purchases the Hoop & Grapes and reopens it under its original name. During the renovation works the burial remains from St Bride's Church are discovered and the many bodies found there are moved into the British Museum.
These gruesome discoveries have undoubtedly led to the numerous stories of the Hoop & Grapes being haunted which continue to this day.
